Drama Workshops Set for School Holiday

The Australian Shakespeare Company logoEach school holidays the Australian Shakespeare Company holds drama workshops for Melbourne's budding young performers. Over the course of the week of each workshop, participants build their acting, improvisation, performance, and directing skills. No previous acting experience is required.

For the upcoming June-July school holiday program, the company is offering two workshops: the Holiday Drama School, June 27–July 2, for ages 9–13, and the Intensive Drama Workshop, July 4–9, for ages 14–18.

The Australian Shakespeare Company's Holiday Drama School is a structured and recreational program of role-playing, mime, expressive skills, script work, improvisational drama games, and more. The week culminates in a live performance showcase with each student presenting an individual character speech or short story, and two-person scripted or improvised scenes. These workshops are for everyone, whether shy or outgoing, new to drama or always performing.

In the Intensive Drama Workshop, participants will be exposed to a wide range of acting techniques and performance styles. Students will explore all aspects of the actor's art and craft. Throughout the week, each actor will work on two pieces: a monologue and a scene. Either may be classical, contemporary (from film, TV, or theater), or self-devised text, or even improvised in the Chicago-style of improv theatre. Both pieces will be staged as part of a performance showcase in front of an audience of the students' friends and family. A section of one piece may also be chosen to be filmed or recorded, separate to the live performance, edited and shown. This is a unique opportunity to engage in professional artistic practice across film and theater.

Both workshops will be conducted from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at The Athenaeum Theatre, 88 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000. Course fee is $450. A limited number of places available, and enrollments close the Thursday prior to the start of each program.
