Open House Shows Off New Home

The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC), based in Ellicott City, Md., is hosting a public open house Sunday, Feb. 24, at its new Baltimore home, the historic Mercantile Trust and Deposit Company building at 17 South Calvert St. at Redwood, Baltimore. The open house, running from 2–5 pm, will give the public an opportunity to to see the space and look at the architectural drawings for what will become a new 250-seat performance space in downtown Baltimore.

The Mercantile Trust and Deposit Company building was constructed in 1885 and is one of Baltimore's more notable architectural landmarks. The building's interior houses a substantial mezzanine, elaborate and colorful carved ceiling, and Corinthian columns. The award-winning architecture firm Cho Benn Holback is working with CSC to incorporate these features into a modern-day Globe.

The Chesapeake Shakespeare Company will transform the historic Mercantile Trust and Deposit Company building into a vibrant cultural center for the entire region, offering energetic performances of Shakespeare and other classics, innovative educational programming for students citywide, school matinees for students across the state of Maryland, and community events.
