It's Not Just a Dream; it's Déjà Vu

The Athenian woods becomes an urban jungle in a contemporary telling of A Midsummer Night's Dream produced by the Sonoma State University Department of Theatre Arts and Dance Nov. 3–12 at the university's Evert B. Person Theatre in Rohnert Park, Calif.

This production is, in fact, a retelling of this particular telling. The university did this production in 1998 and has reunited director Paul Draper, set designer Rob Hamilton, costume designer Robyn Spencer, lighting and projections designer John Connole, choreographer Nancy Lyons, and guitarist and composer Alex de Grassi to remount the original production.

A special post-show discussion follows the 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, matinee performance, in which Draper and members of the creative team plus cast members from both the 1998 and 2011 SSU productions discuss changes in the contemporary landscape in the intervening years. The panel will explore how changes in world events, relationships, technology, social networking, and politics over the past 13 years are reflected in the current 2011 production.
